Hello zoologists of all shapes and sizes! Welcome to my spellbook and thank you so much for clicked on to the 73rd episode of our beasts series. We have another swarm in store for us today the d&d 5e swarm of rats monster which is arguably more terrifying than swarm of bats but it kind of depends on the person i suppose. These swarm of rats is found in the basic rules and it is considered to be cr one quarter and netting you 50 experience points upon defeating it cr:1/4(50xp). Now let’s take a quick look at the stats here.
Table of Contents
The swarm of rats is considered to be a medium swarm of tiny beasts, it is also unaligned. AC of 10 and 24 hit points…. my goodness…calculated by rolling 7d8 and subtracting 7, speed of 30 feet.
- Type: Medium swarm of tiny beasts, unaligned
- AC: 10
- HP: 24(7d8-7)
- Speed: 30ft
Taking a look at its stats there..you’ll notice not really a whole lot to break about. I mean ok dexterity, ok wisdom outside of that you know generally not too exciting.
- STR: 9(-1)
- DEX: 11(+0)
- CON: 9(-1)
- INT: 2(-4)
- WIS: 10(+0)
- CHA: 3(-4)
This form does however have access to Damage resistances namely bludgeoning, piercing and slashing. It also has Condition Immunities namely charmed, frightened, grappled, paralyzed, petrified, prone, restrained and stunned. Which all makes sense because those are all typically conditions that apply to one individual target already swarm is by definition several targets so. It does make sense to me, once again an area effect stuff might be homebrew in there but whatever. Another senses you’ll see 30 feet of darkvision and passive perception of 11. Which isn’t overly excited.
Now let’s take a look at its other traits. The swarm of rats is access to keen smell and of course it has the swarm trait.
Keen Smell: Here the swarm of rats monster has an advantage on the wisdom (Perception) checks which is rely on the smell.
Swarm: Of course the swarm can occupy some another creature’s space and vice versa and of course the swarm could move via any type of opening large enough for a small rat. The swarm can not regain hit points or gain a temporary hit points. Which kind of make sense, once again for the same reason the condition immunities make sense.
Bites: Under actions you’ll see it’s a bite attack. It is a Melee Weapon Attack: +2 to hit, reach of technically 0 ft. reason being you have to target one target in the swarm’s space, so the target has to be engulf to by the swarm which is terrifying but it’s kind of cool as well. And on a Hit dealing is 7 piercing damage, calculated by rolling 2d6 or 3 piercing damage calculated by rolling 1d6 if the swarm has half of its Hit Points or fewer.
- Melee weapon attack: +2 to hit
- Reach 0 ft
- One target in the swarm’s space
- Hit: 7(2d6) piercing damage, or 3(1d6) piercing damage if the swarm has half of its hit points or fewer.
So it’s kind of cool, it’s a very front-end loaded enemy type. That being said i really think this makes a good kind of higher level boss almost for low level adventurers. Not so much because of the damage or because of the hit points or anything like that, but rather because of its damage resistances. Basically if you’re not dealing with magic, it’s gonna be a pretty rough to take this guy down and in turn it might be a good way to get your magic casters to get more screen time almost or more importance in those early couple levels. I don’t know just an idea.

A group of rats is referred to as a mischief.
Normalize around Hit Points You can create larger or smaller swarms by picking higher or lower CR monsters to reskin. When reskinning a monster into a swarm, pick as generic a monster as you can find. Instead of using the effects of the base monster, use the effects that the smaller monster would use.29-Jun-2015
For game purposes a swarm is defined as a single creature with a space of 10 feet—gigantic hordes are actually composed of dozens of swarms in close proximity. A swarm has a single pool of Hit Dice and hit points, a single initiative modifier, a single speed, and a single Armor Class.
