DnD 5E Clawfoot Raptor Monster

Hello paleontologists of all shapes and sizes! Welcome to my spellbook and thank you so much for checking out the 79th episode of our beasts series. Today we’re gonna be taking a look at the dnd 5e clawfoot raptor monster which is pretty cool not gonna lie. Found in the basic rules and it is considered to be cr one half and netting you a mighty fine 100 experience points on a kill cr:1/2(100xp). I’ve always been a fan of the dinosaurs always really like them. In any case let’s take a quick moment and go over their stats.

Table of Contents

So, the clawfoot raptor is considered to be a medium beast that is unaligned. Which means the vast majaority of you races can’t ride on. An AC of 14 which is arguably the highest AC we’ve covered up until this point. 16 Hit points calculated by rolling 3d8 and adding 3 and a very nice speed of 50 feet.

  • Type: Medium Beast, Unaligned
  • AC: 14
  • HP: 16(3D8+3)
  • Speed: 50ft

Taking a look at his stats you’ll notice impressive numbers in both strength and dexterity netting you a +3 bonus in each and a +1 the constitution and wisdom which is still pretty good.

  • STR: 17(+3)
  • DEX: 17(+3)
  • CON: 13(+1)
  • INT: 2(-4)
  • WIS: 12(+1)
  • CHA: 10(+0)

Under skills man does the clawfoot have a lot going for it. +5 to athletics, +5 to perception and +5 to stealth. However it’s only sense has a passive perception of 14. And if you thought that was all you’d be wrong! it’s got some other traits as well.

Other Traits

One in particular called pounce. If the Clawfoot Raptor moves at least 30 feet straight towards the creature and then hits with it with a claw attack on the same turn, then that target should be succeeded on on a DC13 strength saving throw oe be knocked prone. In any case the target is prone, the clawfoot can make one bite attack against it as a bonus action. Which is pretty cool kind of a modest version of multi attack almost. Yeah pretty nice. Now let’s take a look at its actions.

Now let’s take a look at its actions, the clawfoot raptor has access to two actions such as claws and bite.

Claws: The claws is a melee weapon attack: +5 to hit, reach of 5 feet and can target one creature and deals 10 slashing damage on a hit and that is calculated by rolling 2d6 and adding 3.

  • Melee weapon attack: +5 to hit
  • Reach 5 feet
  • One creature
  • Hit: 10(2d6+3) slashing damage

Bite: Now it’s bite attack has a melee weapon attack:+5 to hit, reach of 5feet and one target exactly the same as claws. However it only deals 5 piercing damage on a hit calculated by rolling 2d4 and adding 3.

  • Melee weapon attack: +5 to hit
  • Reach 5 feet
  • One target
  • Hit: 5(2d4+3) piercing damage

Pretty cool stuff! but before we dive into how i would use my Clawfoot raptor in my games, i just have roving packs of them. That seems to be the obvious way to use them. I know they don’t have pack tactics. However i do like the idea of just quite a few of them together. Maybe being ridden by goblins or something of that nature. I just really like the visual behind that. My reasoning is they don’t have a ton of hit points.

Their AC is decent but for sizable party there’s ways around DC and namely magical spells and i don’t really consider these guys to be the super deadly. At least unless they knocked one of the party members prone and use their pounce ability to get that kind of pseudo multi-attack.

That being said! Let me know what you think of the clawfoot raptor down beneath, let me know how you would use them in your games. Also be sure to mention any thoughts, questions, comments, or concerns you have regarding them. I hope you all have a great day and as always happy researching my friends.
