Elk Monster DnD 5E

Hello zoologists of all shapes and sizes! Welcome to my spellbook and thank you so much for choosing into the 54th episode of our beasts series. Today we have arguably one of the most majestic mounts. Maybe side from things like the unicorn or celestial origins but still an incredibly majestic mountain store for us today and just a graceful creature creature in general. Unless of course you’re a hunter in which case this is going to be quite the treat for you both literally and figuratively. We’re talking about the Elk dnd 5e monster ladies and gentlemen. Found in the basic rule set and considered to be a cr:1/4 and provides 50 experience points on a kill. That being said let’s take a quick look at its stats, we can address what we’re talking about.

Table of Contents

Stats

The elk is considered to be a large beast, that is unaligned. It has an AC of 10, and it has 13 hit points calculated by rolling 2d10 and adding 2 and a impressive speed of 50 ft.

  • Type: Large Beast, Unaligned
  • AC: 10
  • HP: 13(2d10+2)
  • Speed: 50ft

Taking a look at the stats, you’ll notice it’s quite strong has a decent constitution to it and is actually one of the most charismatic beasts we’ve covered thus far.

  • STR: 16(+3)
  • DEX: 10(+0)
  • CON: 12(+1)
  • INT: 2(-4)
  • WIS: 10(+0)
  • CHA: 6(-2)

Taking a look at his senses..you’ll only see a passive perception of 10 which isn’y terribly exciting. That elk much like a lot of the other potential mounts has access to the charge ability though.

Traits

Charge: Suppose, the elk 5e monster moves nearly 20ft., straight towards the target and after that hits it with the ram attack on the similar turn, even this target can also takes an extra 7 (2d6) damage. However if the target is a creature and then it must be succeeded on a DC 13 Strength saving throw or else it should be knocked prone.

Very cool stuff. Now lets take a quick look at his actions. So the elk actually has two actions that’s kind of based on circumstances.

Actions

Ram: The first is a melee weapon attack that provides a +5 to hit hit bonus which is very incredible. Reach of 5 feet, one target and deals 6 bludgeoning damage on a hit. Calculated by rolling 1d6 and adding 3. (Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6 + 3) bludgeoning damage).

Hooves: The elk can also do a hooves attack. It is also a melee weapon attack, also +5 to hit. The target however must be a prone. Very interesting stuff and deals 8 bludgeoning damage calculated by rolling 2d4 and adding 3. (Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one prone creature. Hit: 8 (2d4 + 3) bludgeoning damage).

So very cool stuff…one can be done at any point in time and can trigger the charge effect and the other can only be done to a prohm creature which is very interesting i do like it.

That being said in terms of ways to fool the man, i feel like they’d be pretty good in a kind of tracking, kind of scenario. This is especially good if you’re enforcing the food a kind of rule set which you should be anyways. So food starvation all that good stuff and this is just a great way of making it a little bit tricky you’re really taking advantage of that movement speed.

Their passive perception isn’t super high either so assuming you’re a half-decent your stealth checks, it should be a pretty easy encounter the only exception of that is if you get spotted in this thing becomes hostile or tries to run away. This might be a little bit problematic. It does have a pretty decent hit pool for earlier adventurers so it all comes down to how they approach it. That’s most likely how i’d go about implementing this creature into my game or maybe providing it as a mount for some wood else or something along that line.

Faqs

The flavor text in the MM even notes that they can be tamed, so riding one doesn’t seem problematic. Multi-attack is great and the added perception bonus (because we communicate telepathically) is nice. The Giant Elk has a run speed of 60 (identical to my current horse).31-Dec-2015

The Elk that players are able to ride are based in an extinct species of deer called “Megaloceros giganteus” also known as the Giant Elk. It is a little late to complain about that as Thranduil is already shown riding an elk during the Battle Under the Trees Session Play for months now.11-Dec-2017

No one domesticates elk, not like they domesticate horses. The most that is done is they’re partially domesticated in a free-range setting for meat consumption. Not for riding.11-Dec-2017

The Tarrasque

Description. On average these creatures stood 7 ft (2.1 m) tall at the shoulder and weighed around 1,500 lb (680 kg).
